On The Short End! (from North Star's point of view...)

North Star Falls To Brookville In PIAA Team Duals

BOSWELL, PA - Maybe the outcome would have been different. If... If Chuck Wiltrout hadn't suffered a decisive injury at 119 pounds. If Brandon Weimer hadn't gotten caught on his back late in his 135 pound bout. If 152 pounder Gary Gisbrecht was able to stay off the mat for just a minute and a half longer. If defending District 5 champion Randy Rubisch hadn't run into a buzz-saw in the form of Mark Himes at 171 pounds.

You can continue to count the 'ifs', but the plain fact of the matter is that North Star just came up a little bit short in a 31-30 PIAA Dual Meet loss to District 9 Champion Brookville.

The Raiders, who mounted a charge that featured six consecutive victories from 135-171 pounds, erased a 12 point team deficit, and instead transformed the score into an insurmountable 31-18. With two bouts remaining on tap, Mark Himes' major decision victory at 171 pounds clinched the victory for Brookville.

Despite the fact that the match was already won by Brookville, Mike Heidorn (189) and Chris Graboski (275) informed those in attendance that the Cougars still had plenty of fire left in them, as each secured falls to set the final score at 31-30.

In the early stages of the match, it appeared as though North Star was well on their way to doing what they have done the entire season - win.

A technical fall by Mark Pelesky at 103 got the Cougars rolling. Sal Lascari followed with a decision at 112 for a 9-0 lead. After Chuck Wiltrout suffered a match ending injury at 119, Doug Sodano picked up a fall for six more team points. An inspiring win at 130 pounds by Cole Peterson increased the Cougar lead to 12 points.

Peterson, the top ranked 125 pounder in District 5, moved up a weight to go head to head with Josh Sammons, District 9's top 130 pounder. Peterson won a gritty 7-5 decision, and North Star had what seemed to be a very favorable lead. Instead, Brookville stole the show, and the match, with six consecutive victories.

The Cougars, who had wrested their way to a 13-0 dual meet record entering the match, suffered their first loss at the most inopportune of times. For the second straight year, the Cougars were denied a trip to Hershey, PA, for the PIAA team semi-finals.

Despite the loss, North Star head coach Erick Fish remained upbeat, and had nothing but praise for his squad.

"You know, if you're going to lose, this is the place to do it - in the state tournament," said Fish. "We lost in the pig-tail, and we go home now, and they go on to Hershey... I wish them luck."
