Notes:

Now there was a coaching chess match...

Friday, January 18, 2002 Autieri keys Owls' mat win Bradford High's Ben Autieri knew his match at 189 pounds was going to be important Thursday night, he just didn't know how important! When Autieri was called to the mat, the Owls were leading Smethport by three points, 27-24, but would be forfeiting at heavyweight. Autieri came up with a decision and it gave Bradford a six point lead and 7-5 advantage in weights won. The Hubbers tied the score with the forfeit, but with only six weight class wins, lost the first tie-breaker criteria and the Owls came away with the victory. The win snapped Smethport's win streak over Bradford and kept the Owls unbeaten in the Allegheny Mountain Wrestling League where they share the top spot with Johnsonburg at 3-0. "We told Ben that we had to get a win from him for us to win the match," said Matt DeGolier, Bradford coach. "He was down by a point in first period and it stayed that way through second, but in third he got an escape and a takedown to win the match 4-2. "That got us to 30 points to tie the team score, and as our seventh weight win, it won the team match for us as the first criteria," DeGolier added. The Owls' coach also picked out the efforts of Kyle Keane and Greg Butler. "Kyle had one of the biggest matches of night with Foltz," DeGolier pointed out. "Both pf them are quality wrestlers. Kyle hung with him and it was 2-2 going into the third period where Kyle got a reversal and three back points to win the match 7-2. "He really hustled the whole time and has improved greatly. His record is now 14-1. "Greg is really coming around as a freshman. He wrestled his heart out and came up with a win in overtime. I'm very proud of him." Thursday's win over the Hubbers squares the Owls overall record at 3-3 on the season. There was only one pin in the match and that went to Smethport's Matt Switzer with a fall in the second period of his 130-pound match. JH - Bradford 44 Smethport 40
