NW Region AAA Analysis

Pataky scored on an early takedown and then used a reinforced wing to score four sets of back points and take a 12-3 lead after two periods. Shirk scored a reversal in the third and ripped on a reverse headlock but got no points for it...

Moore countered a weak throw for the first T2, then they traded switches to end 4-2. Moore cut McClellan loose a minute into the 2nd, then picked up another T2 for a 6-3 lead after 2. Moore opted down and picked up and escape, a takedown and an interlocking point for a strong finish @ 10-4.

Mowrey threw a bunch stuff out in the first - a duckunder, a dump, a headlock, and a Russian tie - but no points. Adams opted down and Mowrey pounded him in the legs for two minutes - but no points. In the third, Adams got sloppy on a tilt attempt and Mowrey was able to pop his hips loose and snag the deciding reversal. Adams had one shot at a high Peterson roll in the third, but no go.

Stoltz picked up the frist T2 on a single-leg, then in a scramble came down hard on his head just as Fisher was about to score. Saved by an injury time... Fisher took down and was able to swtich out of Stolz's legs to tie it 2-2 after 2. Stoltz worked good hand control for an E1 on a standup, but Fisher finally converted a double attempt (after a long scramble) to take a 4-2 lead. Late in the period, Stoltz caught a leg as it was being put in and slipped it for an R2 and some back points. Exciting finish.

Surra played take-em-down, cut-em-loose for two period. Carlin had one great shot at a crack-down single in the first period that Surra was really pushed to block. Great effort. Surra showed constant movement on the bottom in the third and finally got loose for a 7-3 margin and the win.

It looked like Harrison had Kocher number for most of this match. Harrison scored three takedowns and let Kocher up four times for a 6-4 lead after two. Finally, late in the 3rd, Kocher came alive and hit a strong double for 2, then rolled through a cross-arm tie into a tilt for three back points and a sudden 9-6 lead. Harrison escaped and Kocher hist another double to finish 11-7. Huge comeback win.

Guenot was trying to come out the back door on a double early in the first and had Tobin stacked tight on his shoulders. Everybody saw it but the ref... After four takedowns, Guenot hit a BIG pancake that took Tobin straight to his back for the fall. Finished early at 3:33!

[Ed note: not being familiar with either uniform, I had these two reversed earlier. Thanks to an alert reader for the correction!]
Stroniolo, coming into the finals undefeated, handled Sutliff. Thumped him. Sutliff almost slipped out the back door on a double attempt early in the first, but was stalemated. Storniolo scored on the next shot. Storniolo opted down and got past the legs for an R2/N2 and a 4-0 lead. On top, he hit Sutliff with a tight hammerlock and a reinforced wing. No points, but Storniolo was on the attack. With Sutliff on bottom in the third, it was more of the same, as Storniolo was relentless in his pursuit of a high half. This guy is TOUGH on top. With Hart and Galloway pounding on him in practice, it's probably a survival technique.

Galloway likes being on his feet. This is the only rematch of a Districts finals - and maybe Smith is tired of wrestling this guy. Six takedowns and a nice standing roll into a 3-pt nearfall, along with a "flip" counter to Smith best single-leg attack. You have to wonder how many of those 5 losses of Smith's are owned by Galloway. It would be depressing.

Hart came out of a 0-0 first period with a quick escape and an immediate re-shot into a double. Textbook. 3-0 turned into 4-1 after a quick cut and a stalling penalty. Hart looks like one of the Iowa Hawkeyes - always moving, always attacking - relentless. Another stall point and a double in the 3rd opened it up to a 7-2 finish. Nice work. Seems like that loss in the district finals motivated him.

Heist also likes his feet. An early double stood up, despite cries from the crowd about Nyman's whizzer. Nyman got loose off the whistle in the second on a great standing Granby, but gave up three more takedowns en route to a 8-3 finish.

Much action in the first period, but no score. Trading escapes in the second and third, the match was knotted at 1-1. But Myers was intense on the attack and was able to draw two stall calls against Voelker for another point and the margin of victory. A tough call in a tie match, but Voelker was blocking and backing and had the call coming, from our vantage point in the stands. Guess the ref though so, to0.

Weird situation in the first. Marovich slipped a headlock attempt, but Sutter secured an arm throw and had Marovich in trouble on the mat. Marovich finally slipped a leg in and had enough control for two. Sutter quickly switched - and then got reswitched! 4-2. After trading escapes in the 2nd and 3rd, it ended 5-3. That little flurry in the 1st was the margin of victory for Marovich.

Advancing (sorted by Districts)

D6 is advancing 20 to States, D8 is moving 1 on, D9 is advancing 6 and D10 moves 10.
D6 earned slightly more than HALF the available spots.

Jeremy Hart of State College has the disticntion of being the ONLY Regional Champ this year that was NOT a district Champ. He lost to Tyler McCall of Central Mountain in the D6 finals. McCall lost to Matt Waterman of Carrick in the semis, who in turn lost to Hart in the finals. McCall went on to drop a 4-4 OTRO decision to Nick Wood of Corry in the consy semis and will not be advancing.
