Johnsonburg wins team title; six individual champions; Iorfido outstanding wrestler

Penns Valley takes two titles at home

SPRING MILLS -- It was cold and snowy outside, but Penns Valley enjoyed the warm, cozy conditions inside the gym at Penns Valley High School by sending six wrestlers to the finals of the Ram Challenge on Saturday. The Rams hit a wall in the championship round but still managed to crown two champions and place fourth out of eight teams with 162.5 points.

Johnsonburg had six individual champions in winning the team title with 208.5 points. Indian Valley took second (175), Tyrone was third (164) and Huntingdon rounded out the top five (159).

Penns Valley freshman Preston Shawver pinned Mike Votano of Johnsonburg in 3:39 to win the championship at 125 pounds. Shawver plowed his way to the finals by pinning Eric Yingling of Huntingdon in 38 seconds in the quarterfinals before earning an 8-4 decision over Brett Harris of Tyrone in the semifinals.

"We know he's a tough kid, we expect him to do well this year," said Penns Valley coach Jeff Stover. "We were really encouraged with his performance today."

Kendall Ridenour made quick work of Johnsonburg's Dan Carnovale with a pin in 1:26 to win the title at 189. He earned a trip to the finals with a bye in the first round and then a 13-6 decision over Indian Valley's James Kahley.

"Kendall is a pretty big and strong kid. I was really impressed with the way he wrestled today," Stover said. "If he can stay healthy, he'll be a big help for us down the stretch."

Brett Gephart (130), Mike Wise (145), Craig Herrold (160) and Chris McCully (275) all placed second for the Rams.

"We're a really young team with only two seniors. We had some bright spots, but we also made some mistakes that we have to work on," Stover said. "This tournament is like a stepping stone for us. Next week, we go to Penn Cambria. That tournament is a little bigger and a little tougher competition than today. We'll use this as a preparation-type tournament. We saw how our guys performed. Now we'll go back into the room and try to eliminate our mistakes so we can get better."

Gephart was pinned by Indian Valley's Matt Shank in 5:21 in the finals. He received a bye in the quarters and then blanked Tyrone's Derrick Moore, 4-0, in the semis to get to Shank. Gephart gained an escape in the second period to take a 1-0 lead over Moore and then chose bottom in the third. He turned Moore over with less than 15 seconds left to earn three near-fall points and the win.

Wise also had a bye in the quarters and then pinned Jesse Shaw of Tyrone in 2:48 to advance, but fell to Johnsonburg's Francis Jovenitti, 8-5, in the finals.

Johnsonburg's Steve Iorfido, who was named the tournament's outstanding wrestler, pinned Herrold in 40 seconds to win the 160-pound title. Herrold posted two impressive wins to get to the finals. He won by major decision, 10-2, over Paul East of Huntingdon in the quarters and then a 6-1 decision over Matt Fetzer of Indian Valley.

"He was pretty disappointed because he's a senior," said Stover. "He's a really good wrestler and he had lofty goals. He wanted to go undefeated this season. It's just disappointing, but if he's gonna get caught now is the time of year to get caught."

Jon Neese of Marion Center squeaked by McCully in a 2-0 decision to win at 275. McCully was solid in his quest to reach the finals with a pin in the first round over Eli Russler of Indian Valley in 3:05. He then earned an escape point in the second period and a penalty point in the third to advance to the finals with a 2-0 decision over Huntingdon's Adam Linetty.
