Four Owl grapplers win titles

EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio -- Four Bradford High wrestlers captured titles Saturday at the East Liverpool Tournament.

The Owls were led by Kyle Keane and Casey Neely who each won titles in the first-level tournament, while Mike Wheeler and Ryan Farrell won titles in the second-level tourney.

Keane, who wrestled at 119 pounds, recorded three falls, one major decision and one decision to garner a first-place crown.

Neely, competing at 152, turned in five falls and one major decision. He earned his title with a win over Ryan Burns (Hillview, Ohio) who was a fifth-place finisher in the Ohio state wrestling tournament.

"I was very impressed with the way those two boys wrestled," explained Matt DeGolier, BHS head coach. "They had some very good competition and wrestled strong and wrestled smart.

"Kyle had two state place-winners in his weight class along with himself. He had probably one of the toughest weight classes this weekend."

At 160 pounds, Tom Bleem garnered fourth, while Keith Long was third at 189.

In the second-level tournament, Wheeler took first at 125 and Farrell followed suit with his own victory at 145.

Greg Butler was second in the 130 class as Kyle Hoch earned third at 135.

"I was very impressed with the way the team wrestled. We are a little better conditioned than what I thought we were," DeGolier admitted.

"The kids hustled and never gave up in their matches. It was just a strong showing for the first time out this season.

"I'm looking forward to our dual meet at home on Tuesday against Clearfield. It's going to be a tough meet for our boys."

Team-wise, the Owls placed eighth out of 14 teams.
