DOMINATING FACTORS

It appeared at times that Saturday's championship round of the McDowell Wrestling Tournament was a dual match for St. Marys and Brockway.

Each school had seven wrestlers aiming for titles, and four of the 13 final bouts featured head-to-head battles between the schools. They also finished first and second in the nine-team tournament, with Brockway claiming the team crown. Four Rovers won individual championships as Brockway accumulated 2131/2 points. The Dutchmen had three titlists and finished with 199 points.

Jamestown, Pa., was third with 177 points, followed by McDowell (155), Mercer (1431/2), Maplewood (142), Northwestern (1191/2), Harbor Creek (59) and Kennedy Catholic (291/2).

"I'm happy with the way our guys wrestled," Trojans coach Eric Witherite said. "We're still young and we're still making mistakes a young team makes, but we've come a long way since last year. There's four or five really good teams here and Maplewood's an outstanding team, and to finish ahead of them is big for us."

Three area wrestlers earned titles - Northwestern's Zack Schaffer and McDowell teammates Ryan Marovich and Ryan Smith.

Schaffer squared off against Mercer's Charlie Burke at 145 pounds and quickly fell behind 4-0 after Burke registered a takedown and two-point near fall in the opening minute. Schaffer, though, scored a reversal in the closing seconds of the period to halve his deficit.

Neither wrestler scored in the second period or for most of the third until Schaffer, with another reversal, knotted the score at 4 with just 4 seconds remaining. Schaffer notched a takedown 11 seconds into the extra session to win 6-4.

Marovich, wearing with a protective mask, defeated Brockway's Kyle Smith 2-0 in the heavyweight match. The Trojans junior scored on a second-period reversal.

"He cut his eye at practice last week and had some stitches. He wore the mask so the cut doesn't open up again," Witherite said. "It's tough and he was asking (during) the whole match if he could take it off, but that would have been more trouble than what it's worth. (The mask) cuts down on your peripheral vision, but it's not a big deal. He's good enough that he can wrestle with it on."

Ryan Smith followed Marovich's victory with a 6-2 decision over Jamestown's Kevin McElhaney at 103 pounds. Smith, a sophomore who usually competes at 112 pounds, recorded a takedown 13 seconds into the match and gained three points on a near fall in the closing seconds of the first period for a 5-0 lead.

"Ryan Smith made the commitment to go down to 103. He sacrificed a lot this week to go down, and I think it paid off for him," Witherite said.

Other champions were Brockway's Lenny Calhoun (112), Corey Mancuso (140), Scott Rendos (152) and Jonathon Cantafio (160); St. Marys' Jesse Meyer (119), Josh Meyer (130) and Doug Surra (135); Mercer's Josh Sicilian (125); Kennedy Catholic's Jimmy Gibson (171); and Maplewood's Matt Wilcox (189).

Gibson was Kennedy Catholic's only entrant. He earned a hard-fought 5-4 decision over St. Marys' Tyler Rieder.

ERIE - Maplewood's Matt Wilcox won the 189-pound title to help Maplewood to a sixth-place finish in the nine-team McDowell Tournament.

Brockway won the team championship with 2131/2 points. Maplewood finished with 142.

Wilcox, a returning PIAA runner-up, pinned Jamestown's Dan Harnett in 1:49 in the finals to remain unbeaten on the season.

Josh Hollobaugh also reached the finals for the Tigers, dropping a 7-5 decision to Brockway's Jonathan Cantafio in the 160-pound finals.

Picking up thirds for Maplewood were Ryan Bradick at 140 and Brian Mulligan at 145. Wayne Polley placed fourth at 152.

Maplewood will be back in action Tuesday when it travels to Meadville.

St. Mary's, Brockway taking early D-9 spotlight
By TOM ROOF
The Times Herald

St. Marys Public and Brockway High have been making some early-season statements they aren't to be taken lightly come late in the season.

St. Marys, which has won just two District 9 Class AAA Championships - in 1992 and again in 1997 - and Brockway, which last won a D-9 Class AA title in 1988, may just been the teams to beat come February.

The Dutchmen. who thumped Cameron County, 53-15, in its season opener, and beat tough Redbank Valley last night, have had two strong tournament showings - winning the nine-team Eisenhower tourney with 157.5 points, and then this past weekend placing second at the Erie McDowell Tournament with 199 points.

Topping the tough nine-team McDowell event, however, was Brockway with 213.5 points. The two D-9 schools topped a field that included Jamestown (Pa.) with 177 points, McDowell (155), Mercer (143.5), Maplewood (142), Northwestern (119.5), Harborcreek (59) and Kennedy Christian (29.5).

Both St. Marys and Brockway had seven wrestlers aiming for titles by the end of the night, with the Rovers coming away with four champions and the Dutchmen three.

Winning for Brockway were Lenny Calhoun at 112, Corey Mancuso (140), Scott Rendos (152) and Johnathan Cantafio. For St. Marys were Jesse Meyer (119), Josh Meyer (130) and Doug Surra (135).
