Clearfield completes comeback, drops P-O
By
Ron Bracken

PHILIPSBURG - It took Philipsburg-Osceola 16:15 worth of wrestling to get out to a 12-0 lead on Clearfield Saturday night but it only took the Bisons 6:46 to erase the deficit as they went on to pound the Mounties 49-21.

The dual meet between the long-time rivals started at 130 pounds, which both coaches agreed was to P-O's advantage.

And the Mounties made the best of it as Trevor Emigh made a first-period takedown stand up for a 2-0 win over Kevin Pataky and David Wood edged Luke Durant on a rideout after they battled to a 1-1 stalemate through seven minutes.

Matt Bush followed with a fall in 2:45 over Dustin Clark to stake P-O to its 12-0 lead.

"Starting at 130 pounds was the worst spot for us,'' said Bisons coach Jeff Aveni. "That was their most favored part of the lineup. But Alan Queen stepped up for us. That was a big win for him and for us. That put the momentum in our favor and we got some falls from there on.''

Queen was trailing P-O's Matt Shimmel 6-3 going into the second period of their 145-pound bout but he took Shimmel down, turned him and pinned him in 3:09.

"Shimmel was wrestling well but he didn't look away from the half-nelson when he should have,'' said Mountie coach Dave Caslow. "That crushed us, especially when he was winning 6-3 and lost by fall.

"I thought the draw favored us. We wrestled well in our first three matches. We had a couple of toss-ups in there and we came through in those."

Once Queen pinned Shimmel it triggered a landslide of falls by Clearfield as Lucas Aughenbaugh pinned Vlad Sidorick in 46 seconds at 152, Nathan Shadeck decked Ryan Mostyn in 2:52 at 160 and, after Scott Hall majored Kurt Ammerman 14-6 at 171, Jon Graham pinned Stan Koguc in 3:07 to make it 28-12.

In the night's feature bout, Clearfield's Dave Richards moved up to 215 to tangle with Tyler Chintella and came away with a 5-2 win thanks to takedowns late in the second and third periods. Richards, who had an outstanding season at tailback for the Bisons, weighed in at 180.

"I wasn't surprised that Richards moved up,'' Caslow said. "He's a highly competitive athlete and he wanted to go against the better of our two wrestlers.''

"That was a great show of conditioning and strength,'' Aveni said of Richards. "It wasn't like he was moving up to heavyweight. He was going up against a kid who had good wrestling ability.''

Clearfield resumed its pin parade at heavyweight, where Jon Altemus caught Rodney Brown at the 4:15 mark while trailing 4-3 to make it 37-12.

The Bisons picked up a forfeit at 103 and Brad Pataky, a PIAA runnerup last year, pinned Matt Barnhart in 2:37 for Clearfield's sixth fall of the night.

P-O closed it out with wins from Brian Jones, who beat Tommy Barger 4-0 with a takedown and reversal, and Ryan Dobo, who pinned Zac Wagner in 6:48 in overtime.
