EWL Wrestler of the Week CLARION'S DOM SURRA Our Eastern Wrestling League's Wrestler of the Week for the week ended December 9, 2001, is DOM SURRA of Clarion University. Mr. Surra is a fifth-year senior from Kersey, Pennsylvania (St. Mary's Area High School). Dom spent last summer banging fenders while racing stock cars at his local track, and spent last weekend banging heads with two of the best 149 pounders in the nation - Billy Smith of West Virginia University and Nate Wachter of Penn State. On Friday evening (12/7) Dom Surra started the West Virginia/Clarion dual meet off with two first-period takedowns against nationally ranked Billy Smith, and finished up with a close 6-5 win. West Virginia, currently ranked 13th in the nation by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, won the meet 23-12. On Saturday the Clarion Golden Eagles returned home for a match against another top team - Penn State University. Although Clarion dropped the meet 26-9, Dom Surra won his match over nationally ranked Nate Wachter. The match was tied 1-1 late in the third period, when Surra exploded in for a high-crotch takedown with only a tick left on the clock. Congratulations to Dom Surra, our Eastern Wrestling Leagues' Wrestler of the Week! Also, a tip of the EWL headgear to Lock Haven's wrestling team, who hammered out three solid dual meet wins at Lehigh's Sheridan Invitational on December 8. The Bald Eagles started off with a 28-9 win over Ohio University, then beat Rider 25-13 and finished the day with a 23-12 victory over Rutgers.
