PORT ALLEGANY, Pa. &emdash; Doug Triplett didn't know what kind of
effort he'd get from his wrestlers when Port Allegany High School
opened its season Thursday night.
The one thing he was sure of was that Ridgway would be a tough team to meet right out of the gate. Sure enough, the Elkers raced to a 42-12 lead before the Gators took the last three bouts and closed the final gap to 42-28.
"We had a real solid finish," said Triplett. "And the match at 145 (pounds) between Tony Zimmerman and Garrett Smith went right down to the last couple of seconds. "For our opener, I would have to say I'm pleased.
"Our kids did a nice job against a real good team. It's just that all the pieces didn't fall our way tonight.
"From a coaching standpoint, you're always looking for a way to gauge where your team is," said Triplett. "Especially coming off just two weeks of practice. "Ridgway is the kind of team that will show your kids where they need to improve."
Adam Rohrer (171 pounds), Allen Lovell (189) and Casey Petteys (heavyweight) scored back-to-back-to-back wins for Port Allegany (0-1).
Ridgway High School's Nate Zameroski is tangled
with Port Allegany's B.J. Greenman during Thursday night's 130-pound
wrestling match at Port A. Zameroski held on for an 1-8 win as
Ridgway prevailed in the match, 42-28.
